‘Het Amsterdams Grachten Paleizenparadijs’. Exhibition Canal Museum 2024
You are looking at the work of Janneke Viegers called: The Amsterdam Canal Palace Paradise. Janneke is a visual artist who lives and works in Amsterdam. This painting belongs to the series of city portraits. A series of over 100 works, each painted to the same size. During the 30 years Janneke has been working on this series, her paintings have become more and more abstract, increasingly reduced to the essence. According to Janneke, each new painting is a logical next step. So too in this latest work. It is Janneke's contribution of visualizing the Amsterdam Canals. At first glance, the canals are not immediately recognizable. Nevertheless, the work is full of symbolism. For instance, the grandeur of the work symbolizes the majesty of the new wealthy bourgeoisie. They showed their wealth through their palaces on the canals developed in the Golden Age, under the state system of the first Oranges. Gold and Orange. The word ‘paradise’ in the title is taken from the 17th century German urban writer Philipp von Zesen, who called the canals ‘the earthly paradise’ ‘with wonderfully decorated houses’. This work is about experiencing emptiness, space for imagination, meaning history, associations and contemplations that the viewer can discover in it. ‘De Staat’ 2024 This pendant, an obelisk is named DE STAAT and was created by Janneke Viegers. This artwork is named after De Staat (or translated the Republic). The Republic is one of the most influential dialogues by the Greek philosopher Plato. Whose ideas are still relevant today given current Amsterdam developments. The Republic is about an ideal State and society for, in which the three classes of mankind should work well together: the working class, the second class are the police and soldiers (called guards) and the third class the rulers. The triangular shape of the obelisk represents these three stands. This work incorporates a lot of symbolism. The slender obelisk, all in gold leaf, stands for victory and here too, just like in the large painting, it represents the wealthy bourgeoisie of the Golden Age with their gold-decorated palaces along the canals. Thus Louis Andriessen, Dutch composer and musical political rebel. used Plato's Republic as inspiration for his musical piece of the same name. Louis Andriessen is namesake of Jurriaan Andriessen, painter of the landscape wallpaper in this room. The gold here also refers to the Napoleonic period of restorations of the rooms of the Grachtenmuseum Museum of the Canals 2024, audio tour. |
